Literature Text

My breath catches,
your eyes, like pools
of moonlight rise,
and I can feel the tides
of my blood shift.

I am reborn,
every time you gaze
upon me, for I die,
"La petite mort"
on the edge of your
fingertips.

Only your lips,
a whisper in the dark,
with the taste of honey
and wine may revive
my soul again.

Amid waves of
voluminous sheets
among the aroma of
our sensuality,
I feel the warmth of
your skin, my hand
counts your heart beats,
the rhythm vibrates
through my cells.

Rightfully,
it, your heart, belongs to me
and here beneath
my caress is where
I would plunge the dagger
if ever your love strayed.

We laugh,
for this of course
is understood,
you fold your arms around
me, and know,
always, always you
will love me.

And I wrap myself
in memories of your
every touch, with
a sigh of ecstasy
as you kiss lullabies
upon my throat,
dream sweetly.
I wrote this for a Valentines Day poetry contest so on the one hand I wanted to create something that was a reflection of my genuine feelings for my own valentine, but on the other hand I wanted to write something that offered a bit of an unconventional view on love. So I wanted to create this very private and honest moment between a pair of lovers that captured the essence of their passion without becoming over sentimental and a typically sweet idyllic romantic poem. I wanted it to feel more real, and more "human"
